Big Dreams

Big Dreams was an arts programme for young people from military families living in Albemarle Barracks.

Through engaging arts activity, the programme raised the aspirations, confidence and self-esteem of the young people and helped them to define their cultural identities and enhance their ambitions. They were also supported to complete their Arts Award qualifications.

The programme began with a series of taster workshops to let the young people try out a variety of arts activity, and from this they selected textile artists and printmakers Theresa Easton and Clare Armstrong to deliver a longer-term programme.

Big Dreams also enabled the young people to visit a range of local cultural organisations and venues, broadening their experience and encouraging them to think outside the confines of the perimeter fence behind which they live.

Big Dreams was very much led by the young people, from planning the sessions to curating the celebration and exhibition event held at the end. They told us that:

‘It gives me lots of skills to do different arts subjects.’
‘I love it.’
‘They [the artists] took the time to get to know us and played a lot of games to do this.’
‘I think it’s AMaZinG!’

The programme was a partnership between Albemarle Barracks and Helix Arts, supported by funding from Awards for All.
